What is Continuous Integration? Continuous Integration by Martin Fowler and Matthew Foemmel.
An important part of any software development process is getting reliable builds of the software. Despite it's importance, we are often surprised when this isn't done. We stress a fully automated and reproducible build, including testing, that runs many times a day. This allows each developer to integrate daily thus reducing integration problems.

FreeBSD is an advanced BSD UNIX operating system for the Intel compatible (x86), DEC Alpha, and PC-98 architectures. It is developed and maintained by a large team of individuals. FreeBSD offers advanced networking, performance, security and compatibility features today which are still missing in other operating systems, even some of the best commercial ones. Powerful Internet solutions FreeBSD makes an ideal Internet or Intranet server. It provides robust network services, even under the heaviest of loads, and uses memory efficiently to maintain good response times for hundreds, or even thousands, of simultaneous user processes.

Linux is a clone of the operating system Unix, written from scratch by Linus Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the Net. It aims towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliance. It has all the features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix, including true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, shared copy-on-write executables, proper memory management, and TCP/IP networking. Linux was first developed for 32-bit x86-based PCs (386 or higher). These days it also runs on (at least) Compaq Alpha AXP, Sun SPARC and UltraSPARC, Motorola 68000, PowerPC, ARM, Hitachi SuperH, IBM S/390, MIPS, HP PA-RISC, Intel IA-64 and DEC VAX. Ports are currently in progress to the AMD x86-64 architecture. Linux is easily portable to most general-purpose 32- or 64-bit architectures as long as they have a paged memory management unit (PMMU) and a port of the GNU C compiler (gcc).

The GNU Hurd is the GNU project's replacement for the Unix kernel. The Hurd is a collection of servers that run on the Mach microkernel to implement file systems, network protocols, file access control, and other features that are implemented by the Unix kernel or similar kernels (such as Linux). The Hurd is a personality for the Mach micro-kernel which exports a bevy of services to the application.

The goal of the Plex86 project is to create an extensible open source PC virtualization software program which will allow PC and workstation users to run multiple operating systems concurrently on the same machine. Plex86 will run as much of the operating system and application software natively as possible, the rest being emulated by the PC virtualization monitor. A highly visible and often requested use, would be to allow for Windows software to be run inside of GNU/Linux or other UNIX like operating system.

The OSKit is a framework and a set of 34 component libraries oriented to operating systems, together with extensive documentation. By providing in a modular way not only most of the infrastructure "grunge" needed by an OS, but also many higher-level components, the OSKit's goal is to lower the barrier to entry to OS R&D and to lower its costs. The OSKit makes it vastly easier to create a new OS, port an existing OS to the x86 (or in the future, to other architectures supported by the OSkit), or enhance an OS to support a wider range of devices, file system formats, executable formats, or network services. The OSKit also works well for constructing OS-related programs, such as boot loaders or OS-level servers atop a microkernel.

The Purpose of the Virtual Laboratory Toolkit is to provide information and free software tools. They are relevant for the creation of a Virtual Laboratory. This Toolkit should enable scientists in the developing countries to establish and participate in basic Virtual Laboratories. Two types of tools which play an important role are covered: person-to-person (P2P) communication and person-to-equipment (P2E) communication.
